Thanks to the quick response of clergy and parishioners, a man who tried to commit suicide in a church in St. Petersburg last night was saved.

53-year-old Ruslan K. is being treated for severe burns to the face, neck, and chest at the Janelidze Research Institute of Emergency Medicine after he doused himself with gasoline and lit himself on fire in Holy Trinity Cathedral last night, reports Tsargrad.

Most likely he will require plastic surgery.

Thankfully, the clergy who had been serving last night and parishioners who were still in the church were able to respond quickly, and a team of doctors even came to the man’s aid. It was later revealed that the man himself had called for an ambulance before the act, telling them they would have to help a man with burns.

The victim’s exact motives are unknown. Eyewitnesses say he demanded to call the Archangel Michael. Police are investigating the incident.
