The Romanian Orthodox Diocese of Maramureș and Satu-Mare has already completed two houses for flood victims in northwestern Satu-Mare County, and three more are on the way.
The funds for four of the five houses were raised by the Diocese’s “Build a House, Build Souls” campaign, and the fifth is being funded by the Deanery of Carei, the diocese reports.
A short but torrential downpour on May 13 caused the most severe flooding in the country in 20 years, forcing hundreds of people to evacuate their homes.

“>The diocese responded immediately, and its representatives worked together with local town councils to assess where the most help was needed after 740 acres of agricultural land and 66 dwellings were flooded throughout the county in May.
The diocese has also provided support in the form of food, shoes, and building materials.
His Grace Bishop Timothy of Satu-Mare and Archimandrite Casian (Filip), advisor for the diocese’s social-philanthropic and missionary department and rector of Holy Trinity Cathedral in Baia Mare, inspected the work on the houses on Friday.
