England vs India, player ratings: Kohli has an Anderson problem and Robinson the real deal

Ollie Robinson produced a dazzling display of seam bowling as England steamrollered India on the fourth morning of the Headingley Test, claiming victory by an innings and 76 runs.

The tourists had scraped and clawed their way back into the game on day three, reaching 215 for two to clear much of their foreboding 354-run deficit, but saw their resistance reduced to rubble as England squared the series 1-1 in emphatic fashion.

England took eight wickets for 63 as they blew their rivals away with a relentless whirlwind of probing pace bowling and unflappable catching. Robinson was the star performer, taking four big wickets to wrap up fine figures of five for 65.

James Anderson and Moeen Ali took one apiece as the pressure piled up, before Craig Overton mopped things up to leave India shellshocked at 278 all out.

England

Rory Burns 8/10
Half of that 135 opening stand, Burns does things his own way and is used to having to convince people of his worth. A survivor, which England’s openers need.

Haseeb Hameed 7/10
He’s back. The highest England opening partnership since Hameed was last here all those years ago. Got a bit stuck on the morning of day two but the grittier, moodier Hameed is a welcome sight.

Dawid Malan 8/10
Looks like he never left. Unflustered, unassuming and happy to get on with the job. An experienced, important No 3 in a position no-one else wants. Keep him.

Joe Root (c) 9/10
There aren’t enough superlatives to describe Root’s batting. And for the first time with a platform to launch from, the freedom – and the joy – was evident. Shrewd captaincy handling his bowlers on day four too.

Jonny Bairstow 7/10
Handy with the bat, doing what was required and stunning in the slip cordon. Loving life back in whites. Eyeing up the keeper gloves.

Jos Buttler 7/10
A controversial assertion after a thumping win and flawless behind the stumps, but could this be Buttler’s last series? Bairstow’s hunger, his wife’s new baby due (Ashes unavailability?), Buttler’s white-ball prominence and only averaging 14 this series.

Moeen Ali 7/10
Not the numerical returns this match but full of confidence. Thrown the ball when the seamers were in full flow, to get Shami through the gate just two balls in on day four was a thing of beauty.

Sam Curran 6/10
One of two England bowlers to be on a hat-trick, played his part in the first innings demolition but increasingly being overshadowed by others in both disciplines. May succumb to a returning Chris Woakes.

Craig Overton 8/10
The perfect substitution. The Headingley pitch suited Overton’s fuller length, the one which has seen him so consistently rewarded in county cricket. A faster, more mature bowler than two years ago.

Ollie Robinson 9/10
Two five-wicket hauls in two matches, we should stop being surprised that Robinson can perform at this level. Hungry, ruthless and plenty more to come. Stuart who?

James Anderson 9/10
Recency bias deprived Anderson of the player of the match award. Three wickets for six runs by the time he got Kohli out first time around, he also precipitated the second-innings collapse too and had Kohli in all sorts of trouble. Never leave.

India

Rohit Sharma 6/10
Top scorer in that fateful first innings and got India off to a simple, sensible start in round two. Still searching for that overseas ton. It’ll come.

KL Rahul 3/10
The first double failure of the series. India will hope it’s a blip and it might well be; there is only so much you can do against the genius of Anderson.

Cheteshwar Pujara 7/10
Plays better when India are up against it than when they’re way ahead. A useful trait, and imperative for India if they’re to secure a series win. Looked like Pujara on Indian decks in the second innings.

Virat Kohli (c) 5/10
Has an Anderson problem. And an edge problem. Not an issue when India are flying but he’ll know it. Highest score of his series in the second inning but England now have a clear tactic against him.

Ajinkya Rahane 3/10
Double figures in both innings is better than most of his peers but will look to erase this Test from his memory and look ahead. India need more middle-order mettle.

Rishabh Pant 4/10
Audacious and threatening every time he comes to the crease, he has met his match in Robinson, who has dismissed him on four of five occasions this series. Ridiculously talented, needs to adapt.

Ravindra Jadeja 6/10
Lovely ball to dismiss Hameed, and the last rearguard action with the bat in the second innings. Too much to do to salvage anything for his team, a noble but futile contribution.

Mohammed Shami 8/10
The pick of India’s bowlers and rewarded with the bulk of the workload. An Indian seamer made for English conditions, kept his lengths and used his skills wisely. Beautiful to watch, just too little to defend.

Ishant Sharma 4/10
Couldn’t find his rhythm. At all. Full marks for trying but neither the pitch nor the conditions for his skills, even if he had managed to execute them. Almost certain to make way for Ravichandran Ashwin.

Jasprit Bumrah 7/10
A premier, imposing fast bowler. Always a handful, as he was at Headingley. Got Root again, just needs to find a way to do it sooner. No batting heroics this time.

Mohammed Siraj 6/10
Still competitive, still probing, still an important component of India’s seam attack. Just not enough runs to play with. Astute review to get Malan out on the stroke of tea on day two.
