But dressing like a princess in 2022 is not just for the under-tens and titled. It’s a trend that is spilling into the mainstream, with tulle and taffeta skirts popping up in spring/summer 2022 collections from the most minimalist of brands (Khaite, Raey and Arket, I’m looking at you).
The trend even has a name – Princesscore – and encapsulates other princess-y characteristics like puffed sleeves, tiaras (and embellished headbands), ruffles, full skirts and pastel hues. You don’t need to be a psychologist to make the observation that we’re all craving a little sartorial escapism and fantasy after the past two years of self-isolation and lockdowns.
That real-life royals are tapping into this aesthetic has more significance to it though. Royal image-making has always been a delicate art, but never more so than today, when their roles and contributions to society are under so much scrutiny. By channelling this visual ideal, Kate, Mary and Letizia are positioning themselves as stable ambassadors for the most traditional of institutions, while their day-to-day activities and charity work reminds us that they are relatable women of the people.
It’s a balance that requires some skill, but these women all get it right. Elsa and Anna – and the generation of children obsessed with them – would approve.
