Did Prince Harry’s staff ever get away with ‘inner work’?

Prince Harry has called for workers to be given time off to do “inner work” and enjoy some “me time”, revealing he now sets aside about 45 minutes every morning to “build resilience” and meditate.

Yet I wonder if the Duke and Duchess of Sussex ever encouraged their staff to do the same when they were working for them as members of the Royal Family?

What might Meghan’s response have been, for instance, had she fired off that first early morning email of the day, only to receive an out-of-office message saying: “Sorry, can’t talk right now, I’m just meditating for 45 minutes”?

We can only hazard a guess, but if the couple were honest with themselves after this period of Californian “reflection”, I think they would probably have to admit that the time their staff had, they dedicated to their bosses, not themselves. Working for a royal tends to be a round-the-clock role, rather than a nine-to-five one.

Of course, they are not alone in this respect, and most royals – like most high-profile celebrities and VIPs – have a tendency to be rather demanding. Indeed, it has been well documented that it was Harry who told Angela Kelly, the Queen’s most senior aide, ahead of his 2018 wedding: “What Meghan wants, Meghan gets.” Let’s hope she got the chance to do some “inner work” afterwards.

So while I applaud Harry for once again championing better mental health, the world is divided into people who can afford to spend 45 minutes every morning “building resilience” and the rest of us.

May I humbly suggest that if you have hard-working staff doing everything for you, including your cooking, cleaning, laundry and child care, and you don’t have to worry about the daily commute, paying the mortgage, workplace bullying or missing out on a promotion, then you are suffering from something, but it probably isn’t burnout.
