‘It was humanity at its finest’: Mick Brown on Queen, David Bowie and U2 at Live Aid 1985

“The story of Live Aid is that tens of thousands of people were saved and it was an extraordinary, unique, and amazingly positive thing that happened. In a way, it was humanity at its finest.”

Mick Brown, a writer for The Telegraph Magazine, attended the Live Aid concert of 1985 as a reporter. Masterminded by Bob Geldof, the concert went on to become one of the most monumental stage shows in history and raised over £150 million for famine relief.

In this video, Mick Brown gives a first-hand account of the extraordinary concert – Queen’s famous Bohemian Rhapsody performance; The Beach Boys’ Good Vibrations; Bono’s slow dance with a fan; and the hard-hitting reminder from David Bowie that the performance was in aid of the starving in Ethiopia. Enjoy Mick’s remarkable recollections alongside video highlights of the big performances of the day.

This is the fifth episode in a video and podcast series featuring the stories of Telegraph journalists who witnessed history.
