Why this season’s Women’s Super League is the most competitive yet

In fact, this season is currently on course to be the first since the WSL expanded to have at least 10 teams [after 2016] where there has not been a single game won by a seven-goal margin or more. Last term, there were four such landslide wins by seven goals or more, including Chelsea’s 9-0 cruise past Bristol City, but this term there have yet to be any such runaway victories.

And the number of WSL games being settled by just a single goal or being drawn is slightly up compared to last term, from 44 per cent to 46 per cent, while there’s been a small fall in the number of matches being won by five goals or more, from 12 per cent down to 11 per cent.

The reason behind that would appear to be the improvements being made by bottom-half sides, in what is the fourth season since the entire league turned fully professional. This term, the range between the points-per-game ratio of the leaders, and the points-per-game ratio of the bottom side, is a narrower range at this stage of the season in the WSL than in any campaign since 2015, when there were only eight teams in the division, which again suggests a division which is more competitive.

Despite that, at the bottom, neutrals are also being treated to a tense relegation battle, as there are just two points between Birmingham City and Leicester City, who will meet at St Andrew’s on Sunday.

How does the WSL compare to other major women’s leagues?

While the stats would therefore suggest we are being treated to surely the best WSL season to date, how does it stack up compared to other major women’s leagues globally? Because, in truth, England’s top sides have not had it easy in the Champions League.

Looking at the domestic league of the European champions in Spain for example, there are – just as in the WSL – currently six teams averaging more than 1.6 points per game this term. However, one of them, all-conquering Barcelona, are streets ahead, with a points-per-game ratio of exactly three because of their 100 per cent record. And the Catalan club have won more than a third of their league games by a seven-goal margin or more, something we have not seen in the WSL this term.
