While Christiane Taubira, who served as justice minister under Hollande, won last month’s “people’s primary” to lead a coalition of Left-wing parties, the majority of other candidates refused to accept the verdict.
The Socialists’ candidate, Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo, came in last place in the primary and is currently polling to take a meagre thee per cent of the vote in the first round of April’s elections.
Mr Cypel told Le Parisien on Monday: “When I see the situation of my party and the other Left-wing formations, I find them irresponsible…this is why I decided to support the President of the Republic. He’s someone who embodies social democracy, a modern France and he is faithful to its model.”
While Mr Cypel said he would support Mr Macron, he is officially joining the Territories of Progress, a social democratic party founded by government ministers Jean-Yves Le Drian and Olivier Dussopt in February 2020. However, the party is not fielding its own candidate.
