A Leicester supporter was arrested and in custody on Sunday night after he ran on to the pitch and appeared to punch a Nottingham Forest player in another weekend of fan disorder across the leagues.

The Football Association will launch an investigation after the incident which followed Forest’s third goal in their 4-1 FA Cup victory.

The fan appeared to land a blow on Keinan Davis, the Aston Villa loanee, before he was taken away by stewards. Leicester have promised a lifetime ban.

Arrests at football matches are the highest in years and this latest incident, in the first East Midlands derby since 2014, will only increase concerns over the rise in trouble off the pitch.

Brendan Rodgers, the Leicester manager, insisted a “lack of respect” has spread across all society and is not just prevalent in football.

The incident happened after Joe Worrall scored Forest’s third goal in front of the Leicester fans in the Bridgford Stand with Forest’s players reacting before the fan was pulled to the floor and restrained by stewards.
