Labour MP Rosie Duffield: Keir Starmer no better than Jeremy Corbyn and it could make me defect

Speaking to Friday’s Chopper’s Politics podcast – which you can listen to using the audio player above – Ms Duffield laid bare the harassment she has faced from activists who have posted incorrect details about her private life.

She claimed her local constituency had been leaked information “about my personal life directly from the PLP” [Parliamentary Labour Party]. “It makes you feel very strange and vulnerable,” she said.

‘I don’t feel there’s a huge amount of difference’

Some of the most “disturbing” messages she had seen were discussions about where she might be living. “I have to tell the local police where I’m going to be almost all the time,” she said.

Ms Duffield pointed out how Mr Corbyn had refused to get involved when she was threatened with a censure motion when she first spoke out against anti-Semitism in the party – and said little had changed under Sir Keir.

She said: “When Jeremy Corbyn was interviewed about my local party, they had a motion of no censure because I was talking anti-Semitism, they wanted to basically shut me up.

“Jeremy was repeatedly asked if he supported me or if he would make a statement supporting them. He said he didn’t get involved at local level, and didn’t make statements about local constituency parties.

“I don’t feel there’s a huge amount of difference at the moment. And some of those characters are still around and still organising against me.”

Sir Keir got in touch after her comments about transgender rights last year meant she had to miss the party conference, and again last month when “obsessive harassment” from current and former party members was making her consider her position in the Labour party, Ms Duffield said.

She added: “We’ve gone through the whole anti-Semitism thing in the Corbyn years. It feels to me as though this is just a continuation. It’s not just a new thing. And from where I sit, on my own in Kent, I don’t see a huge difference.”

‘Labour is still two parties’

Part of the problem was that Sir Keir was failing to take on the Left within Labour, she said, adding: “The issue is we’re not really telling the truth about the make-up of the Labour Party. It is two parties and it’s still two parties.

“We’ve got the Corbynistas’ wing and we’ve got the more centrists. It’s very lovely that Keir wants to unite everyone and wants to kind of get rid of people that are difficult and problematic. But it hasn’t happened yet, and those people are digging down all the time.

“He’s pledged to unite the party and to support both wings. But personally, I don’t see how that is possible.

“That means promoting people from a particular faction, keeping in with the unions. All of that is important but at some point, over some issues, you have to come off the fence.

“This party is divided into two, certainly at the local level. Women [MPs] are still finding it very difficult to go to local meetings.”
