Just don’t pair it with champagne, or most sparkling wine for that matter, says Telegraph columnist Susy Atkins. Though both are classic romantic gifts, and with good reason, Atkins argues the two are a “match made in hell. High acidity and crisp bubbles meeting sweet, mouth-coating richness forms a nasty clash: to get the best out of each, keep them well apart.”
Atkins prefers sweet wine, perhaps a muscat such as California’s Andrew Quady Essensia Orange (£13.99, Majestic), or a port like Taylor’s Late Bottled Vintage 2016 (£10, Morrisons).
If you’re dead set on fizz, Atkins recommends going pink – a cliché, perhaps, but why not lean into it? There are some brilliant options for less than £20 out there, with Atkins recommending Co-op’s Irresistible Eight Acres sparkling rosé from Kent (£18, Co-op), and M&S’s Prosecco rosé 2020 (£8, M&S), which she describes as the best pink prosecco around. But remember to keep it away from the chocolate.
If you’re planning on cooking for a loved one it’s worth buying something special that isn’t particularly hard to make. For Telegraph food columnist Diana Henry, scallops, lobster, duck breasts or steak fit the bill. All are great to make for two people and feel a little special.
