‘Inaction has consequences’: Telegraph readers on Dame Cressida Dick’s resignation

‘This country needs to decide what sort of police force it really wants and needs’

@D Buxton:

“This country needs to decide what sort of police force it really wants and needs.

“Do we want an organisation which fearlessly and fairly enforces the law, protects lives and property and prosecutes offenders? Or do we wish to continue to be policed by a largely ineffective, virtue signalling, politically correct and politically driven organisation whose objectives often seem at odds with the priorities of the communities they are supposed to be serving?”

‘A change in Commissioner will make no difference’

@Paul Hughes:

“Once walking a beat on your own was consigned to history, it took with it the ability of young police officers to learn about how to deal with people and the ability of people to learn about their police officers in non-confrontational situations.

“A change of Commissioner will make no difference to the fundamental collapse in the relationship between the public and the police caused by phasing out beat policing. It’s very sad.”

‘The Met needs a chief whose loyalty is to the Queen’

@David Blakeman:

“Cressida Dick was a disaster for the Met, as was her predecessor. It needs a chief whose loyalty is to the Queen as in the oath each policeman takes on entering the service – not to a political party or ‘woke’ concepts.

“Their first act should be to revert the Met to its original name ‘Metropolitan Police Force’. Words have meaning. It’s not the social services and they are not social workers.

“They should also ensure every officer has a smart and well presented uniform and should send the unfit officers on fitness training.

“Finally, they should reopen local stations and put constables out on the beat with their own route. This is important so they can build a relationship with their local public and pick up local intelligence on criminals. It’s not rocket science.”

‘Inaction has consequences’

@Phil Sadler:

“I have zero sympathy for Cressida Dick. Actions have consequences, or often in her case inaction has consequences.

“If voters disagree with the way Sadiq Khan has approached this, they can vote him out the next chance they get. Would Cressida Dick have been a better Commissioner with a Conservative mayor? Unlikely.”

‘People want to see police personnel on the street in a non-threatening way’

@Alan Norris:

“How about some straightforward old-fashioned policing? We should have more police walking their regular neighbourhood beat, rather than ten or a dozen of them sitting in vans all over London waiting to be called to an incident.

“People from all heritage communities in London want to see real police personnel on the street in a non-threatening way as a regular part of their community, not just appearing when someone is attacked. We need police that know and recognise their own neighbourhood.

“Cressida seems to prefer the police behind a desk or in a posse waiting to be activated.”

‘Consider why she is going’

@Kathryn Jones:

“Whilst many will be celebrating Cressida Dick’s departure, and I agree she was useless, consider why she is going. Sadiq Khan wants someone who shares in his woke and anti-British agenda.

“If Sadiq Khan gets his way, expect further redefining of misogyny, sexism and racism and expect it to run through the entire Metropolitan police. Make no mistake, this is a furthering of the Marxist agenda.”

‘The wrong person has resigned’

@Roger Gant:

“The wrong person has resigned. The person responsible for the out of control crime in London is Sadiq Khan and he is the one who should be resigning.

“Do not be surprised if his brother or some other kinsman is appointed as the new Commissioner, so he can further his agenda.”

‘That she was forced out by failings of culture tells us all we need to know’

@Susan Harris:

“That Cressida Dick was forced out by failings of ‘culture’ in the police but not for failure to tackle rising crime tells us all we need to know about the priorities of our ruling classes.

“Instead of appointing Cressida Dick a year ago, Boris Johnson should have taken the opportunity to clear out the Met police. Now Sadiq Khan will get the credit, in turn making the Prime Minister look weak”

‘The only resolution is to start afresh with a new force’

@David Jones:

“I have come to the unfortunate conclusion that the police are beyond reform.

“The only resolution I can see working is to start afresh with a new force based on protection of citizens, property and freedoms. Properly funded, properly trained and fully resourced. It will take some years to set up but once operational and transitioned, the existing police force should be closed down.

“This is radical, but I don’t think the existing police force, particularly under Cressida Dick, have the capability or the desire to do their job in a way that we would expect.”
