The Metropolitan Police is braced for more damaging revelations relating to its officers’ conduct as the search begins for a successor to Dame Cressida Dick, it has emerged.

The first female Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police announced her resignation on Thursday evening, saying she had been forced out by the Mayor of London.

The country’s most senior police officer had been under pressure following a string of controversies, but resigned after Sadiq Khan said he was “not satisfied” with her plans to change the culture at Scotland Yard.

In her statement, Dame Cressida, who has led the force since 2017, said: “It is clear that the Mayor no longer has sufficient confidence in my leadership to continue. He has left me no choice.”

Now, a report by the police watchdog into the activities of former constable Wayne Couzens is expected to highlight opportunities the Met had to stop him before he murdered Sarah Everard last year.
