Urgent reforms needed to combat ‘perfect storm’ facing British policing, Labour warns

Ms Cooper directly criticised Priti Patel, the Home Secretary, saying that she had been “silent on policing for a year” and that “none” of the necessary reforms had been implemented by her department.

“We have not seen any of the kinds of reforms to policing that we need and Labour has set out a plan that would do that, including reforms to training, including reforms to vetting, including reforms to misconduct, and including at their heart, making sure that violence against women and girls is part of the strategic policing requirement given to police forces across the country by the Home Office,” she said.

Ms Cooper’s statements come in the wake of Dame Cressida’s resignation on Friday, after Sadiq Khan, the London Mayor, said he was “not satisfied” with her plans to change the culture at Scotland Yard.

Mr Khan has since warned that he will oppose the appointment of a new Met Police Commissioner unless they have a “robust plan” to deal with the “cultural problems” that have led to a series of scandals.

Writing in The Observer, the London Mayor said he was “deeply concerned” that public trust and confidence in the country’s biggest police force “has been shattered so badly”, which he concluded could only be rebuilt with new leadership at the top of the Met.

“I will not support the appointment of a new commissioner unless they can clearly demonstrate that they understand the scale of the cultural problems within the Met and the urgency with which they must be addressed,” he said.

“In short, they need to get it, and they need to have a proper and robust plan to deal with it.”
