Costs of working from home overtake commuting for one in five

A third of home workers reported higher food costs and broadband costs have risen for almost a quarter of respondents. These bills are scheduled to climb sharply too, as BT will implement a 9.3pc price rise in April.

Nevertheless, on average Covid has been good for household finances and has boosted savings. Wealthier families have tended to fare better than those on lower incomes, who may have been cut off from more precarious work.

Of those still reporting lower costs, half said they are benefiting from car parking and fuel bills. Two out of five 40pc are spending less on public transport. Younger adults tended to report they saved more on buses and trains, while those aged over 50 typically said driving was the bigger saving.

Analyst Sarah Coles at Hargreaves Lansdown warned that some of these costs will stick around when people return to the office.

“Millions of us are spending more on energy, because companies are massively hiking their prices. If people compare their costs now to their costs before the price rises, they might see the rise and blame homeworking,” she said.

“It’s much harder for them to compare their costs now to their costs if they were back in the workplace, because they’re yet to experience it.”

Consumer prices are already rising by more than 5pc annually and the Bank of England expects this will rise to a peak of 7.25pc in April when bills rise again.

Officials have warned this means households’ real post-tax incomes will drop by around 2pc in 2022, the biggest fall for any calendar year on records dating back to the start of the 1990s. As a result families may start eating into those savings they built up in lockdown by working from home, to cover rising prices.
