The ABI has urged all policyholders to contact their insurer as soon as possible in the event of a flood and, when safe to do so, arrange for temporary emergency repairs to stop any damage getting worse.
“Tell your insurer and keep any receipts, as this will form part of your claim,” an ABI spokesman said.
“Do not be in a rush to throw away damaged items, unless they are a danger to health, as these may be able to be repaired or restored.
“If you do need to throw any items away, take a photograph and take a small sample of items such as carpets before you do.”
It can take weeks, or longer, for a property to fully dry out following a flood, so residents should not rush redecorating or moving back in.
The cost of running dryers and dehumidifiers to speed up the recovery process can have a significant impact on energy bills. Residents should take an electricity meter reading before the drying out process begins, in case these costs can be claimed back.
