But who’s to pay? Ms Sturgeon complained on Tuesday that all four Home Nations contributed towards paying for the tests and the testing infrastructure, but decisions were always based on what was best for England.
Being an avid student of such things, I reckon there’s an almighty row brewing here, but one that Ms Sturgeon is not yet ready to fully open fire about yet.
She is looking for the UK Government to “clarify” the “who pays” issue in the coming weeks. However, Sajid Javid, the Health Secretary, didn’t sound too sympathetic to Ms Sturgeon’s problem on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme on Tuesday, pointing to the huge sums that her government had already received during the Covid crisis.
She also said that the Prime Minister’s proposals had “overlooked” the hundreds of people currently working in the test-and-protect infrastructure. What would happen to them?
Douglas Ross, the Scottish Tory leader, complained that the First Minister was picking a fight with the Prime Minister over the ending of restrictions when she was planning to do much the same as him two weeks later.
To this, she came up with one of her rare, but well-crafted jokes, when she said that after Mr Ross’s record of criticising the Prime Minister, it was “a bit rich” of him to accuse her of picking a fight with Mr Johnson.
Boom boom.
