Three tries in his first two games of the league season, with a brace at Sale preceding that score against Irish, suggested that it was business as usual for the young wing. But having set the bar so high any drop-off was going to be noticed. The length-of-the-field score he produced against Newcastle suggesting order was restored, just in time for Wales to benefit in the Six Nations.

With Wales, part of Rees-Zammit’s struggles with form have stemmed from Wales’ failure to get the best out of him in attack.

Rees-Zammit produced a superb try against Fiji in the autumn, again showing amazing speed to touch down his own kick before it bounced dead, racing past two Fijian defenders. But it was the exception rather than the norm during that Test window, with Rees-Zammit hardly benefiting from the way Wales’ attack struggled to fire, the young wing receiving few attacking touches with most of his work spent contesting in the air and covering in defence. He lasted 48 minutes in the win over Australia before limping off after a whack to his knee.

As for this year’s Six Nations so far, an ankle knock in the warm-up against Ireland led to some heavy strapping and perhaps understandably not his best performance, albeit on a day where Wales were poor across the park.

Graham’s try for Scotland will have been especially disappointing. Given the height mismatch – Graham stands at 5ft 9in, Rees-Zammit is 6ft 3in – and the lack of space for Graham (as good as he is) to work with facing a one-on-one tackle from Rees-Zammit near the corner, the fact that Graham managed to wriggle through to score was a low moment for Rees-Zammit defensively.

You would have to be out of your tree to think that Rees-Zammit will not be back in the Wales side in the very near future. But all young players, even the supremely talented, face bumps in the road. For him, this is the first.
