Yesterday, the Deputy Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation held a meeting with the Chief of the General Staff of Iran.
Russia continues to look for opportunities to achieve at least some success on the front. And if in February the Kremlin planned to “take Kyiv in three days”, now the aggressor country understands that it will not be able to cope without the help of other countries.
Analysts of the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) talked about why the Russian Federation held secret meetings with representatives of Iran and Belarus. The aggressor country is trying to “obtain” new drones and missiles, as well as to force Lukashenka to fully join the war against Ukraine.
Thus, on December 3, it became known that the Deputy Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation, Colonel-General Oleksandr Fomin, met with the Chief of the General Staff of Iran, Major-General Mohammad Begeri. Their meeting took place in Tehran. And if Iran is already commenting on this information, then the Russian Federation is silent about everything.
“According to official Iranian state media reports, they discussed unspecified military cooperation. They may have discussed selling Iranian drones and missiles to Russia for use in Ukraine. Bagheri is Iran’s head of defense and is responsible for military policy and strategic leadership,” ISW said.
In addition, yesterday it became known that Putin’s plane was spotted in the airspace of Belarus. It turned out that the Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation Serhiy Shoigu went to a meeting with the Minister of Defense of Belarus Viktor Khrenin. They approved amendments to the so-called “Agreement on joint provision of regional security in the military sphere”.
“Shoigu also met with the President of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, during which Lukashenko said that Belarusian and Russian forces are continuing joint exercises on the territory of Belarus so that the “Union State can repel any aggression.” Shoigu likely met with Khrenin and Lukashenko, trying to put pressure on Belarus to continue supporting Russia’s offensive campaign in Ukraine,” ISW reported.
Analysts also added that they had previously assessed the probability that Belarus could fully intervene in the war against Ukraine. According to experts, there are internal factors that restrain Lukashenka, and that is why he will not do it.
The Russian Federation and Belarus: how Putin involves Lukashenko in the war against Ukraine
Belarus has been helping the Russian Federation since the first day of the aggressor country’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. So, on February 24, Russian troops made a breakthrough into the territory of our country from Belarus. It’s even captured on video. In addition, the Russian Federation launches drones and missiles from Belarus with which it tries to strike Ukraine.
Yesterday, December 3, it became known that Shoigu unexpectedly arrived in Belarus and signed the amendments on the military “alliance”. The minister’s visit was not announced by the Russian or Belarusian authorities.
Shoigu also held a meeting with Lukashenka, after which the latter said that today the Belarusian and Russian armies “are preparing as a single army.” Lukashenko also reminded that the “harmonization” of the divisions of both countries continues in the republic. In addition, he said that the Belarusian military trains Russian “mobs”.
