According to the president, this happened thanks to the Center for Civil Liberties, which won a world prize.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyi notes that the Ukrainian language was used for the first time at the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony this year.
“Today, in the Norwegian capital, in Oslo, the annual ceremony of awarding the Nobel Peace Prize was held. This year, the language of Ukraine, our Ukrainian language, was spoken for the first time at the ceremony – thanks to the Center for Civil Liberties and its head, Mrs. Matviychuk, who became laureates of the Peace Prize. Congratulations, Mrs. Oleksandr, her colleagues and all Ukrainian human rights defenders with such recognition,” the president said in his video address.
He noted that it is symbolic that the ceremony is taking place on this very day – the International Human Rights Day.
“Until this year, Ukraine did not have a National Day of gratitude and respect for the human rights movement – all those who dedicate their lives to protecting and restoring people’s rights. Now such a day has been established and will be celebrated every year on December 10 – Human Rights Day,” the head of state said.
Zelenskyi also recalled that the day before he signed several important decrees, in particular, regarding the appointment of state scholarships.
“Mr. (Edem – ) Bekirov has been awarded a state scholarship named after Levko Lukyanenko. This is a special scholarship with which the state supports those who were released from captivity by the occupiers, who were saved from Russian repression,” the president noted.
He added that outstanding figures of Ukrainian science, culture and art – a total of 100 Ukrainian men and women – were awarded other state scholarships.
Nobel Peace Prize 2022
As reported, the Ukrainian human rights organization “Center for Civil Liberties” won the 2022 Nobel Peace Prize. Representatives of Ukraine won the Nobel Peace Prize for the first time in history.
Also laureates of the Peace Prize were Belarusian human rights activist Ales Bialiatskyi and the Russian human rights organization “Memorial”. The awarding ceremony took place on December 10 in Oslo.
Such “neighborhood” outraged Ukrainian users of social networks. Mykhailo Podolyak, the adviser to the head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, also criticized the decision of the Nobel Committee, since the award went to Russia and Belarus, which attacked Ukraine.
Before the announcement of the laureates, which took place on October 7, Reuters reported, citing bookmakers’ data, that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Nelson Mandela, Jimmy Carter, Andriy Sakharov and Mykhailo Gorbachev were among the favorites to win the award this year. The list of nominees also included Svitlana Tykhanovskaya, Oleksiy Navalnyi and Mustafa Dzhemilev.
