He noted that the responsibility for crimes in Ukraine lies not only with soldiers, but also with the highest leadership of the country.
The Russian leadership, together with President Vladimir Putin, must be held accountable for all war crimes committed in Ukraine.
This was stated by British Foreign Minister James Cleverley on the BBC.
“Responsibility must come. And this means (not only) the soldiers who commit these atrocities “on the ground”, but also responsibility up to the very top… including Vladimir Putin,” the British minister said.
Cleverley said that official London is studying the mechanisms of possible prosecution of Russian government officials.
“We support the International Criminal Court … and are working with Ukraine and other members of the international community on what the scope of international prosecution might be,” Cleverley said.
War crimes of the Russian Federation in Ukraine
The Russian authorities reject accusations of war crimes, despite numerous evidence to the contrary, including those recorded by international organizations.
In September, the Czech Republic, which presides over the EU, called for the creation of an international tribunal to investigate war crimes committed by Russia in Ukraine.
Former British Prime Ministers Gordon Brown and John Major and other politicians, scientists and lawyers insisted on the creation of a tribunal on the model of the Nuremberg Trials of the Nazis after the Second World War back in March.
The International Criminal Court in The Hague is also conducting an investigation against the authorities of the Russian Federation, and possibly President Vladimir Putin.
