Austria has extended the protection status for Ukrainian refugees: how long will it last

The Austrian government reported that almost 88,900 identity cards had been issued to Ukrainian refugees since March.

The Austrian federal government has announced that it will extend the order on the temporary protection of refugees from Ukraine until March 2024.

According to the government, since March of this year, Austria has allowed more than 90,000 people displaced by the war in Ukraine to stay and register in the country, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

The government noted that the legal stay of Ukrainians in Austria is confirmed by the identity card issued to these migrants. At the same time, it is emphasized that these ID cards will be valid until March 2024.

“The competent authority for issuing ID cards for displaced persons is the Federal Office for Immigration and Asylum. ID cards for displaced persons have now been reissued with a validity period until March 2024 and are produced by the Austrian State Printing Office,” the message reads.

The Austrian government also reported that almost 88,900 identity cards had been issued to Ukrainian refugees since March.

At the same time, about 56,000 refugees from Ukraine are currently receiving basic assistance in Austria. At the same time, more than 67,000 people forced to flee from the Russian war against Ukraine are registered in the central register.

Ukrainian refugees in Europe

As reported, due to the full-scale invasion of Russia, millions of Ukrainian citizens were forced to leave their homes and move to safer places.

Many went abroad, in particular to European countries. Thus, according to the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, about 4.5 million Ukrainian refugees are currently registered under various protection schemes in European countries, many of them in EU countries bordering Ukraine – Slovakia, Poland, Hungary and Romania. .

Meanwhile, the countries of Eastern Europe were preparing for a new wave of refugees in the fall due to the winter cold and Russian attacks on energy facilities. According to the forecasts of the WHO, due to these reasons, another 2-3 million people may leave Ukraine.
