Volker is not sure if Russia has anything left to answer for the supply of weapons to Ukraine.
Former US ambassador to NATO and ex-special representative of the US State Department for Ukraine, Kurt Volker, believes that despite Russian threats, Western countries should continue supplying Ukraine with weapons in order to help our country win the war as soon as possible.
In an interview with Volodymyr Ostapchuk for the “Spotlight Ukraine” program on the “Espresso” TV channel, Volker noted that Russia has already thrown everything it could into this war: conscripts, prisoners, all its military equipment, Iranian military equipment. Because of this, he is not sure whether Russia has anything left to respond to the supply of arms to Ukraine.
“Of course, they will say such things, trying to convince the West to doubt and not hand over weapons. But in reality, we should give Ukraine everything we can so that it wins this war as soon as possible,” he emphasized.
In addition, Volker “does not think” that Russia can somehow react to the transfer of Patriot air defense systems to Ukraine, which were included in the new package of military aid from the United States.
“They have brought to the battlefield all their forces and equipment that they have now. The only thing they can do to escalate is to use nuclear and biological weapons, which they know will destroy them themselves. Will make the territory that they are trying to conquer, uninhabitable and will provoke an immediate response from other countries. It seems that they are not going to do that. They cannot do more with conventional means,” he explained.
At the same time, Volker does not understand “what objections there could be to the provision of Patriot systems to Ukraine.”
“These systems are defensive to help protect the civilian population and civilian infrastructure. By denying it, Russia is almost saying that it had the right to attack Ukraine, which of course is unacceptable according to the legal methods of International Justice,” continued the former US ambassador to NATO.
In addition, the ex-special representative of the US State Department for Ukraine commented on the statement of Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, in which the official refused the “peace formula” proposed by Volodymyr Zelensky and threatened the Russian army.
“There are a lot of funny things in Lavrov’s statement. First, he suggests that the Russian army can solve the problem. The Russian army is on the verge of failure. It’s really difficult for them. Second, it’s deja vu in his statements, because it reminds me of the time when I was the special representative of the US State Department for Ukraine, at that time Russia pretended that Ukraine does not exist and they can only negotiate with the West, with the USA, and Ukraine is not a party to any negotiations and has no legitimacy or representation. again they speak through statements Lavrov. At the moment, they want to negotiate with Ukraine, the country they are attacking, but to negotiate through others, and that simply won’t happen,” Volker summed up.
Provision of weapons to Ukraine: the latest news
Western media write that the US may transfer Bradley combat vehicles to Ukraine as part of an additional aid package. The issue is still under consideration, so it is not known when the final decision will be made.
Earlier, Ukraine’s ambassador to the USA, Oksana Markarova, stated that the work on obtaining American tanks and aircraft is underway, and the training of the Ukrainian military in the operation of Patriot anti-aircraft missile systems will be as fast as possible.
At the same time, the German authorities do not plan to independently deal with the issue of the transfer of Leopard tanks to Ukraine. This will be done in coordination with partners from the North Atlantic Alliance.
