The authors of the robot expect that in the future it will be able to replace lawyers at court hearings.
For the first time, a robot lawyer will participate in a court session – in February, at the hearing, he will advise the defendant. The upcoming court hearing will go down in history.
The world’s first robot lawyer from the company DoNotPay will work in the smartphone of the accused and listen to the comments to give his client instructions on what to say during the debate, DailyMail reports.
Where the trial will take place, the charges and the name of the defendant have not been released.
The creators of the robot set up the audio tool so that it does not respond to people’s statements instantly, but does so after the discussion is over, after analyzing the comments, and only then submits a decision.
“It’s all about talking, that’s what lawyers charge hundreds or thousands of dollars an hour for,” said the robot’s creator, Joshua Browder, who believes his invention will one day replace lawyers.
DoNotPay’s website states that their technology can also be used to defeat red tape; find hidden money and sue anyone. There they gave an example that the robot-lawyer understands consumer rights laws, including canceled and delayed flights and payments, rights in the workplace, etc.
Artificial intelligence in courts
China was the first in the world to use artificial intelligence in the courtroom. In July 2022, it was revealed that the country is using the technology to “improve” the judicial system by recommending laws, drafting documents and warning of “probable human error” in decisions.
Judges must now consult with the AI in every case, and if they violate its recommendations, they must provide a written explanation of why.
China has been developing a “smart court” system since 2016, when Chief Justice Zhou Qiang called for the technology to improve “fairness, efficiency and trust” in the judicial system.
