Every year on January 13, Ukrainians celebrate the Generous Evening or Malanka Day. According to the tradition of this day, young people dressed in Malanka and walked around the village, as well as sang special charity songs. These traditions through the ages have reached our days, and we still remember when it is necessary to be generous and carol in Ukraine.
What is the Generous Evening – the history and traditions of the holiday
The Generous Evening is an ancient Ukrainian folk holiday, on the eve of the New Year. According to the old Julian calendar, this date was December 31 – the last day of the year. Later, the modern Gregorian calendar was introduced on the territory of Ukraine. The generous evening moved to January 13, but its traditions are still remembered. That is why the date January 14 is called Old New Year. The generous evening is also called the day of Malanka, because the church on this date honors the venerable Melania.
Traditions and customs on Shcherda evening
Our ancestors led our ancestors. According to the modern calendar, they give generously on the night of January 13 to 14. Both children and adults can be generous. The most famous shchedrivka in Ukraine and around the world is “Schedryk, shchedryvochka” by Mykola Leontovych.
In addition to giving, the Generous Evening has many other traditions. On this day, Ukrainians organized fairs, played and had fun, lit bonfires. On this day, in the villages, Vasyl and Malanka dressed up a boy and a girl, and they were led around the village in such clothes. Dumplings, meat pies, krovyanka, pancakes were prepared for the Generous Evening. The main dish was a generous kutya, which can be topped with milk or butter.
