Lesya Tsurenko and Oleksiy Krutyh advanced to the next qualifying round of the tournament in Australia.
On Wednesday, January 11, matches of the second qualifying round of the first season of the Grand Slam tournament series – Australian Open-2023 took place.
Ukraine was represented at this stage by four athletes: Lesya Tsurenko, Darya Snigur and Katarina Zavatska in the women’s category and Oleksiy Krutyh – in the men’s category.
Experienced Lesya Tsurenko defeated Spain’s Elena Bolshova and advanced to the next round.
But Daria Snigur could not overcome the second round of qualification, losing to her Czech rival. The Ukrainian won the first set, but lost the other two in a fairly even fight.
Katarina Zavatska also left the tournament after the second round of qualification. The 22-year-old Ukrainian lost to Kateryna Andreeva in three sets.
Oleksiy Krutyh, the first racket of Ukraine among men, for whom this is the debut tournament of the “Grand Slam” series, successfully overcame the second round of qualification. The 22-year-old native of Kyiv defeated Gianluca Magera from Italy.

In the final round of selection, Lesya Tsurenko will play against the Frenchwoman Leolia Zhanzhan, and Oleksiy Krutykh will meet with the representative of the USA, Denys Kudl.
We will remind you that four more representatives of Ukraine directly entered the main draw of the Australian Open-2023: Angelina Kalinina, Marta Kostyuk, Kateryna Baindl and Dayana Yastremska.
The Australian Open main draw matches will be played from January 16 to 29.
The reigning Australian Open singles champions are Spain’s Rafael Nadal and Australia’s Ashley Barty.
