Warsaw intends to fulfill its promise, even if Germany does not give its consent.
Poland intends to transfer Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine regardless of decisions made by other countries. Zbigniew Rau, the head of the Polish Foreign Ministry, told reporters in Brussels.
“We are going to send Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine. We will maintain contact with the German government on this issue. But regardless of the decision of other countries, we are determined to deliver these tanks, as promised,” the diplomat emphasized.
As wyborcza.pl writes, in a conversation with journalists, Rau clarified that Germany is indeed still waiting for a formal request from Poland to transfer Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine.
“We will submit this application. The fact is that Poland should not be alone. And there will be a large group of like-minded countries. So that there is a significant armored formation on the battlefield (from the Leopards – ed.),” Rau explained.
The problem of supplying Leopard tanks to Ukraine
On January 11, the President of Poland promised to hand over a company of Leopard tanks to Ukraine. However, Berlin assures that such supply was not formally agreed with them.
Germany itself also refuses to supply these tanks to Ukraine, without citing any clear reasons for the refusal. In the EU, it is noted that the supply of tanks from other countries is also hampered precisely because of Germany.
At the same time, Berlin assures that it will not prevent the supply of Leopard tanks to Ukraine from other countries, if they make such a decision.
