A feature of this model of the Abrams tank is a new inter-vehicle information system.
Ukraine will receive Abrams M1A2 tanks from the US, which are an upgrade of the older M1A1. Unlike the A1 modification, which works on an analog system, the A2 works on a digital one.
The transfer of these tanks to Ukraine was commented on by CNN and retired Army General Robert Abrams, the former commander of the US Armed Forces in Korea. It was in honor of his father that the American Abrams tank was named. According to him, the difference between these modifications is “like the difference between a disc-wired phone and the iPhone you’re holding in your hands.”
He emphasized that a feature of this model of the Abrams tank is a new inter-vehicle information system. It allows vehicles to exchange information continuously and automatically. With this technology, commanders can quickly track tank locations, identify enemy positions, and process artillery requests.
In addition, the improved version of this tank is also significantly more lethal compared to the A1.
“The M1A2 is far superior in terms of lethality, survivability and mobility to anything Russia has on the battlefield,” General Abrams emphasized.
Provision of Abrams tanks Ukraine
On January 25, 2023, US President Joe Biden officially announced the delivery of 31 M1 Abrams tanks to Ukraine. One tank battalion will be formed from them. The delivery of the tanks will take several months.
Later, US Deputy Secretary of State Victoria Nuland emphasized that the US will not be able to deliver Abrams tanks to Ukraine before the offensive begins next spring.
At the same time, ex-head of the CIA and former commander of the US and NATO forces in Afghanistan, David Petraeus, believes that it is time for the Kremlin to start worrying about the supply of American Abrams tanks to Ukraine, as it was a very important decision. He emphasized that now Ukraine will receive modern Western weapons, including tanks. And this weapon is superior to the old Soviet models.
