Paul was born in the Egyptian country of Thebes, where he worked as an adult. He went out into the desert, found a cave near a stream there and lived alone for 91 years, unknown to anyone but God. Before his death, Paul met Anthony, who came to him after a vision. The saints talked for a long time, and then Paul asked Antony to bury him.
Saint Paul died while praying at the age of 113. He did not found any monastery during his life, but in his memory his associates did it. In addition, St. Paul is considered the father of Orthodox monasticism.
In memory of him today, a national holiday is celebrated on January 28 – Paul’s Day.
The Orthodox holiday of January 28 is the day of memory of John Kushnyk
John came from a rich and noble family, was born and lived in Constantinople. He received an excellent education, loved to read spiritual books, studying them, he found out that everything mundane was foreign to him.
Once John met a monk from the “Neusypyuchy” monastery, asked his parents for the Holy Scriptures as a gift and secretly sailed to the monks on a ship. After much persuasion, John was ordained a monk, and he surprised everyone with his strict moderation and constant prayer.
After 6 years, he defeated Ivan and he wanted to go home. He was released from the monastery, on the way the monk disguised himself as a beggar and did not go to his parents’ house, but settled nearby in a hut. The parents did not recognize their son, but fed him from their table, thinking that the kindness shown to a stranger would return to their son.
Soon the Lord appeared to Ivan and warned him of his imminent death. The saint revealed himself to his parents, and later died at the age of about 25. They buried him at the place where he lived, and then built a church there.
