The Russian invaders have moved to a concerted assault on Vugledar and are apparently planning to advance in a new direction in Donetsk region.

These are the conclusions reached by British intelligence, the Ministry of Defense of Great Britain informs.

Over the past three days, Russia has likely turned its probing attacks around the towns of Pavlivka and Vugledar into a more concerted assault, intelligence officials say.

“The settlements are located 50 km southwest of Donetsk, and Russia unsuccessfully stormed the same area in November 2022 using the 155th brigade of marines. Units of the 155th are also part of the forces (the number is at least a brigade), which probably advanced a few hundred meters across the small Kashlagach River, which has been the front line for several months,” the report said.

British intelligence reports that the Russian command likely aims to develop a new direction of advance towards Ukrainian-controlled areas of the Donetsk region and divert Ukrainian forces from the Bakhmut sector.

“There is a realistic possibility that Russia will continue to make local gains in this sector. However, it is unlikely that Russia has enough idle forces in the area to achieve a significant operational breakthrough,” the report said.

Assault on Ugledar

In recent days, the Russians have been attacking Vugledar from several directions at once, and fierce round-the-clock confrontations have broken out here with renewed vigor. The occupiers throw reserves of equipment and manpower into battle, strike with barrel and jet artillery.

According to Serhiy Cherevaty, the representative of the Eastern Group of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, the Russians have been trying to break through our defenses there for several months in a row.

During the day of January 27-28, the occupiers delivered almost 300 strikes with various volley fire systems and artillery in the direction of Vugledar, conducted 34 assaults.

On January 31, the General Staff reported in the morning briefing that the Ukrainian defense forces repelled attacks by Russian troops in about 13 settlements in the east of the country, including Vugledar.
