A negative trend with population decline has been observed for the fifth year in a row, demographers say that the situation will become worse due to mobilization.
In the Russian Federation, an increase in the demographic catastrophe was noted against the background of new statistics on the reduction of the population and partial mobilization.
According to Rosstat, the number of citizens of the Russian Federation decreased by another 566,000 people. The negative trend in reducing the number of Russians is observed for the fifth year in a row.
Thus, as of January 1, 2023, 146.424 million people lived in the Russian Federation, excluding the population in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine, while for the same period in 2022, 146.98 million people were recorded.
According to The Moscow Times, such a negative result is related to the decline in the birth rate within the Russian Federation. This indicator in relative terms became the minimum since 2001, and in absolute terms it decreased by 7% – to 1.197 million children for January-November.
As the Russian demographer of the Gaidar Institute Ihor Efremov commented, the reduction of the population of the Russian Federation is directly related to mobilization. In the future, the situation will become even worse.
“The main impact on the birth rate will be indirect, as the planning horizon of most families will be completely destroyed. And the effect will be stronger the longer the mobilization lasts,” he said.
Mobilization to – the main events
On September 21, 2022, Vladimir Putin announced an alleged partial mobilization in Russia. However, not only reservists, but also ordinary Russians began to receive summonses to the army.
In mid-December, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Valery Zaluzhny, warned that Moscow could mobilize about 200 more troops amid a new conscription campaign. He did not rule out a second attack on Kyiv.
Recently, it became known that the Russian occupiers will soon complete the training of the newly mobilized, they will probably be sent to the Luhansk region.
Meanwhile, the relatives of those mobilized en masse are trying to reach the Russian leadership with complaints that the occupiers are being thrown to the front line insufficiently prepared. They also got lice and scabies.
