Named 10 tourist locations that should be visited “before it’s too late”

Five cultural and natural monuments around the world were included in the list.

The historic center of Vienna, the Gulf of California off the coast of Mexico and the rainforests of Madagascar have made it to the list of 10 tourist attractions in danger of disappearing.

Five cultural and natural attractions around the world made it to the list compiled by Travel Off Path. One of them is threatened by natural phenomena and aging, and the other by the human factor.

Top 5 cultural monuments under threat

1. Historic center of Vienna, Austria. The main threat is high-rise urban development, which is growing rapidly.

2. The Old City of Jerusalem and its walls, Israel. The main threat is deliberate destruction and the impact of archaeological excavations.

3. Chan Chan Archaeological Zone, Peru. The main threat is a high rate of wear and tear due to lack of conservation and maintenance.

4. Cultural landscape and archaeological sites of the Bamyan Valley, Afghanistan. The landmark suffered major losses in 2001, when the Taliban deliberately destroyed two giant Buddha statues.

5. Timbuktu, Mali. The main threat is the ongoing war in Mali, the occupation and the deliberate destruction of heritage sites by armed groups.

Top 5 natural monuments under threat

1. Sumatra rainforest, Indonesia. The main threat is rampant poaching, illegal logging and planned infrastructure development in the area.

2. Islands and territories of the Gulf of California, Mexico. The main threat is illegal and unsustainable fishing methods that have endangered marine life.

3. Everglades National Park, Florida. The main danger is the threat of storms, pollution, invasive species and urban development.

4. Selous Game Reserve, Tanzania. The main threat is illegal poaching, which has had a devastating effect on the park’s wildlife population. Additional threats come from nearby uranium mines, logging and planned dam construction.

5. Atsinanani Rainforest, Madagascar. The main threat is forest fires, which are a huge risk for the rainforest ecosystem. There are also problems with poaching, mining and illegal logging.

As reported, in January 2023, the historic center of Odessa was included in the list of UNESCO’s world cultural heritage as a threat of extinction.
