Despite American sanctions and violating US export controls, Turkish companies exported electronics, spare parts and other American-made goods to Russia. Some of them are necessary for the provision of the armed forces of the Russian Federation.

“Turkish companies last year exported tens of millions of dollars worth of machinery, electronics, parts and other goods needed by Russia for its armed forces, according to a study of trade data, showing how Moscow can sustain its military efforts despite international sanctions,” – writes The Wall Street Journal.

It is noted that at least 13 Turkish companies were engaged in the supply of goods to the Russian Federation. They exported goods worth a total of 18.5 million dollars. These include, in particular, plastics, rubber products and vehicles. They were supplied to ten Russian companies that were previously sanctioned by the US for their role in Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The journalists analyzed the data and came to the conclusion that Turkish companies sent at least 3 batches of American-made goods to the Russian Federation. In addition, from March to October 2022, Turkish firms exported $15 million worth of US-made elevators, generators, printed circuit boards and other goods to Russia in violation of US export controls.

It is known that the subsidiary of the Russian corporation “Tactical Rockets”, which produces weapons systems for the Russian fleet, also received goods from Turkey from sanctioned companies. In addition, the goods were supplied to the company “Promtehnologiya”, which was sanctioned for the production of rifles for the armed forces of the aggressor country.

According to the publication, among the goods purchased in Turkey were also steering wheels for trucks and filters for American-made engines. It is noted that the Russian Federation purchased American-made conveyors and elevators worth almost 8 million dollars.

The WSJ reports that US Treasury officials visited Turkey, the UAE and Oman to stop Russian military procurement networks in those countries. In particular, at the end of last year, high-ranking US officials warned Turkey that its citizens could be fined or imprisoned for servicing US-made aircraft flying to and from Russia.

The warnings were said to be a test of whether the US and its allies can succeed in isolating Russia in the long term, or whether the Kremlin can soften the impact of sanctions by trading with economies such as Turkey, China, India and Arab countries.

At the same time, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkey, the Ministry of Industry and Trade of Russia, and the Federal Customs Service did not respond to journalists’ inquiries regarding the export of American goods to the Russian Federation.

War in Ukraine: Turkey’s position

Turkey continues to conduct economic relations with the Russian Federation, despite its invasion of Ukraine. Because of this, the US has informed the United Arab Emirates and Turkey that their economic and financial ties with Russia are hindering efforts to contain Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.

In addition, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan opposed the supply of tanks to Ukraine. He believes that this decision will not help to solve the problems created by the Russian Federation.

At the same time, military expert Roman Svitan told how Turkey protected Ukraine from Russian “Caliber” missiles. According to him, the Russian Federation tried to transfer the Caliber carriers into the Black Sea so that more missiles could threaten Ukraine. However, Turkey blocked such a maneuver and sent Russian ships to the Mediterranean Sea.
