The exact location of the missiles has not yet been determined.
The United States of America has asked Japan for permission to place its Tomahawk missiles on the country’s territory. This step is planned to ensure the balance of power with China in the region.
According to the Japanese publication Sankei Shimbun, the US government is asking for the deployment of medium-range missiles in Japan. They are planned to be located on the first chain of islands, including the Japanese archipelago.
“The LRHW long-range hypersonic weapon being developed in the USA and the Tomahawk land-based cruise missile were mentioned as ‘candidates,'” the article says.
The exact location of the missiles has not yet been determined. At the same time, a representative of the Japanese government said that “Kyushu and other places are envisaged.” In addition, a rotational method of patrolling the Indo-Pacific region is being considered.
Tensions in the region due to China: what is known
US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) Director William Burns believes that China is potentially preparing for a war over Taiwan in 2027, although this does not mean that an invasion attempt will actually take place. According to him, the leader of the People’s Republic of China, Xi Jinping, has sobered up due to Russia’s failed invasion of Ukraine, but the United States should not underestimate Beijing’s ambitions for Taiwan.
At a joint press conference with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida in Tokyo, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg noted that China is closely watching Russia’s war against Ukraine and is learning lessons that may influence future decisions. In a statement outlining plans to intensify cooperation between NATO and Japan, Stoltenberg and Kishida stressed “concerns about growing military cooperation between Russia and China.”
At the same time, an independent Washington think tank predicts that a potential Chinese invasion of Taiwan in 2026 will result in thousands of casualties among Chinese, American, Taiwanese and Japanese troops and is unlikely to end in victory for Beijing. Analysts believe that at the end of this conflict, at least two American aircraft carriers will lie at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean, and China’s modern navy, which is the largest in the world, will be in “ruins”.
