Will Ukraine receive Abramovich’s promised billions: the expert called an important nuance

The political technologist believes that this agreement should be carefully monitored.

Ukraine was promised to allocate the funds received from Abramovich's sale

Western media claim that after Putin’s oligarch Roman Abramovich was forced to sell the Chelsea football club, the UK government had to transfer all the proceeds from the deal to Ukraine. It is about 2.3 billion pounds. However, political technologist and writer Mykhailo Sheitelman believes that everything is not so simple, and there is a big cover-up in this matter.

“The first statements about this story, about this amount, were made in May of last year. When sanctions were imposed on Abramovich, it became clear that Chelsea, which he owns, cannot finish the English championship technically, because he is not capable to pay for the bus that will take the football players to the nearby stadium. All the accounts are not frozen, but they cannot carry out operations on the accounts, because this is a club owned by Abramovich, in turn, “Chelsea” received a loan from Abramovich at one time in several billions. 2 billion dollars too, in my opinion. It turned out that it was impossible to play. In fact, “Chelsea” would have simply collapsed if Abramovich had not sold it urgently,” he said on the air of the “Argument” program.

And at that moment, according to Sheitelman, a technical difficulty began, since Abramovich is under sanctions.

“If he sells something, no buyer can pay him anything, just like he couldn’t buy a player or sell a player, nothing can be done about it. And then his financiers, lawyers proposed to the British government this deal that we sell Chelsea in urgently, but Abramovich does not receive the money personally, it is deposited in some closed account. And this money will go to some good cause,” the expert continued.

Permission was obtained for this. Abramovich did not receive any money from the sale of the club.

“At the same time, as now, the newspaper The Telegraph said the following: the money will not be given to Ukraine, but to the victims of the war in Ukraine. Do you understand the nuance? Who are the victims of the war in Ukraine. And the Russian mobilized are victims of the war in Ukraine or not And the residents of Belgorod are victims of the war in Ukraine or not, about whom Putin always says that they need to be compensated for something?… It also looks like victims of the war in Ukraine, right?. Ukraine, specifically to Ukrainian victims. No, victims in general, victims are different. And people who became “refugees” from Russia because they fled, or families of mobilized people who lost breadwinners or something else. Here are the victims of the war in Ukraine,” the political technologist noted.

The expert recalled that then everyone shouted that Abramovich “decided to get out of the sanctions”. However, according to him, everything is arranged more cunningly.

“(Then) I thought: no, if he had said openly that he would transfer it to Ukraine, Putin would have arranged it for him even then, back in May of last year. But everything is arranged much more cunningly. Now The Telegraph, too, in my opinion – I’ll be honest, I didn’t read the whole article – it didn’t say that he would transfer (funds) to Ukraine. To the victims of the war in Ukraine, who suffered from the war in Ukraine. The British regulator will decide everything, not Abramovich. What he will check , what will it do for the mobilized Russians. This should be followed very carefully, this agreement. It is not so sweet-sounding, “Sheitelman summarized.

Sale of FC “Chelsea”: what is known

In May 2022, Russian businessman Roman Abramovich closed the sale of the English football club “Chelsea”. The new owner of the FC was an American consortium headed by Todd Boeli.

At the end of January 2023, it became known that the British government will transfer to Ukraine all the funds received for the sale of the football club “Chelsea” by Roman Abramovich last year. It was noted that the funds will be sent to a special fund for financial assistance to Ukraine.
