The center will summarize information about demining needs.
Due to the fact that, due to Russian aggression, Ukraine is currently one of the countries most contaminated by mines and projectiles in the world, a humanitarian demining center will be created.
As Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal reported in Telegram, the center will summarize information on demining needs from ministries, regional military administrations, partner countries and international organizations.
“At today’s meeting, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Ministry of Defense, the Ministry of Economy and the State Emergency Service discussed the problematic issues of humanitarian demining in Ukraine and the responsibilities of the future institution. The Ukrainian center for humanitarian demining will improve coordination between all subjects of mine action. It will also make it possible to attract all possible resources for carrying out demining,” Shmyhal wrote.
The war in Ukraine and landmines
According to President Zelenskyi, as of December 8, 2022, the so-called “mine pollution” in Ukraine covered about 170,000 square kilometers. That is, over a quarter of the country’s territory.
As of January 2, 2023, in the areas liberated during the counteroffensive actions of the Ukrainian forces, demining was one of the primary tasks of the local military administration.
Mine traps that the Russians leave in houses pose a particular danger. Sometimes the mines are so dense that houses have to be blown up instead of demining.
As of January 29, 2023, Sky News called Ukraine the most mined country in the world.
