These sanctions will expand and deepen previously introduced restrictions in certain categories.
US Deputy Secretary of State Victoria Nuland reported that the United States and the Big Seven are working on the preparation of a large-scale package of sanctions against the Russian Federation. It should be announced closer to the anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine – February 24.
“I think closer to the 24th, you will see a new large package of sanctions both from the US and from all our G7 partners. These sanctions will expand and deepen the previously introduced restrictions in certain categories related, in particular, to limiting the flow of technology and equipment for the Russian defense industry,” Nuland is quoted as saying by Evropeyska Pravda.
Individual sanctions are also being prepared for individuals who are involved in or make efforts to support Russia’s war against Ukraine.
According to Nuland, sanctions may also be imposed against other countries that help the Russian Federation to circumvent previously imposed restrictions. We are talking, for example, about schemes to import laptops, refrigerators, and other household appliances to Russia, the electronic components of which the Russian Federation can use for war.
“We’re going to expand our export controls to cover countries that help Russia. We’ve talked publicly about Iran, North Korea, China. But there are also other countries that are used to circumvent sanctions,” Nuland stressed.
Sanctions against Russia: current news
On February 15, the European Commission officially presented the tenth package of sanctions against the Russian Federation. It also includes sanctions against Iranian entities.
Earlier it was also reported that the European Union plans to introduce sanctions against the shipping company SUN Ship Management Ltd, which helps the Russian Federation in circumventing Western restrictions on oil exports. In April 2022, the company secretly “harbored” 92 ships of the Russian state company “Sovkomflot” in order to organize further transportation of Russian fuel in case of Western sanctions.
In addition, against the background of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, the European Union updated the so-called “grey list” of tax jurisdictions, adding the aggressor country to it.
