According to him, Ukraine expects a very clear formulation at the meeting in Vilnius regarding NATO membership.
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy plans to personally visit the NATO summit, which is to be held in July in Vilnius.
“We are planning it. The first thing we need is an invitation, because Ukraine is not a member of NATO. We hope to receive it and hope for a radical change in the situation related to the war in Ukraine,” the ambassador said in an interview with BNS Ukraine in Lithuania Petro Beshta.
As you know, after the full-scale invasion, Zelenskyi has already visited the USA, Great Britain, France and Brussels. The ambassador explained that these visits were rather exceptions, since Zelenskyy has to stay in Kyiv.
“We expect a very clear wording at the meeting in Vilnius that as soon as the war ends, Ukraine will become a member of NATO,” Beshta said.
Ukraine’s entry into NATO
Last year, Ukraine submitted an application to join NATO in an accelerated manner. Then the Secretary General of the alliance, Jens Stoltenberg, said that the decision must be approved by all 30 member countries of the bloc.
Mykhailo Podolyak, adviser to the head of the President’s Office, is convinced that the process of Ukraine’s accession to NATO will be very quick and depends precisely on the results of the war with the Russian Federation.
On February 15, Stoltenberg commented on Ukraine’s approach to membership.
“NATO’s position regarding Ukraine has not changed. We have repeated many times that Ukraine will become a member of the Alliance, but now the focus is on ensuring Ukraine’s victory in the war,” he said.
