According to Jens Stoltenberg, Russia has lost its chances of achieving its goals in Ukraine due to heavy losses at the front and political isolation.
Russia can no longer achieve its military goals in Ukraine, despite significant military efforts. This was stated by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, Spiegel reports.
He recalled that the purpose of the invasion, ordered by Russian President Vladimir Putin, was to prevent Ukraine’s advancement into NATO and the European Union. Moreover, after almost two years of war, Ukraine is now closer to NATO and the EU than ever before.
Stoltenberg also noted that Russia is paying an extremely high price for its war. Thus, the country has already lost hundreds of aircraft and thousands of tanks, and more than 300,000 soldiers have been killed or wounded. In addition, as a result of the war, inflation increased and the standard of living fell. Russia is also more politically isolated than before.
At the same time, the NATO secretary general cautioned against hopes for a quick end to the war given developments, and against the belief that Putin will change course after his expected re-election on March 17.
“We have no indication that Putin will change his goals and his policies. He will continue to try to occupy more territory,” Stoltenberg said.
In his opinion, this means that NATO and its 31 member states must continue to strongly support Ukraine.
“The Ukrainians have shown that they are capable of defending themselves and defending themselves, especially when they receive weapons from Germany and many other NATO countries,” Stoltenberg concluded.
Cooperation between Ukraine and NATO – latest news
The day before, Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council Alexey Danilov said that joint production of weapons by Ukraine with NATO countries was already taking place. At the same time, according to him, Kyiv needs to increase production, “but these are technical processes that are being worked out by the relevant institutions, worked out by the relevant people.”
Earlier, President Vladimir Zelensky openly stated that Ukraine is not invited to NATO, and the options for partial accession are nonsense.
