Margaret II, after 52 years of reign, leaves the throne to her son, Crown Prince Frederik.
Queen Margrethe II of Denmark leaves the royal throne. She stated this in her New Year’s speech.
“I leave the throne to my son, Crown Prince Frederik,” the queen said.
The change of throne will take place on January 14, 2024, when Crown Prince Frederik becomes King of Denmark.
“I have decided that now is the right time. On January 14, 2024 – 52 years after I succeeded my beloved father – I will leave my position as Queen of Denmark,” Margrethe said.
During 2023, the Queen underwent back surgery.
“The operation, naturally, also gave reason to think about the future – is it time to transfer responsibility to the next generation,” the monarch noted.
Denmark’s relations with Ukraine
In December, it became known that Denmark was preparing new military aid for Ukraine worth almost a billion euros. The new package should include ammunition, tanks, drones and other equipment.
“We are strongly on the side of Ukraine. In Denmark, we have now committed to allocate more than 8 billion euros to support Ukraine and we, together with our partners, will provide F16,” emphasized the head of the Danish government, Mette Frederiksen.
In August, Denmark announced the transfer of F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine. Frederiksen then stressed that Denmark, together with the Netherlands, would be the first countries to do this.
