According to Vera Jourova, the EU motto “united in diversity” was most clearly demonstrated during the war in Ukraine.
The procedure for Ukraine’s accession to the European Union may take several years. Vera Jourová, Vice-President of the European Commission for Values and Transparency, said this in an interview with the portal novinky.cz.
She recalled that the EU motto “united in diversity” was most clearly demonstrated during the war in Ukraine.
“The fact that our position would be so strong and united after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, that one package of sanctions against Russia would be accompanied by another, and that states would be ready to contribute funds and weapons systems, surprised not only a number of experts, but especially the Kremlin itself. Russia launched an information campaign and wanted to convince Europeans that Ukrainians do not deserve their own state. Nothing worked,” Jourova emphasized.
She also commented on Hungary’s “demarche” regarding the issue of support for Ukraine from the European Union.
“I was very relieved when Hungarian Prime Minister Orbán came out of the meeting room, drank coffee backstage and thereby allowed accession negotiations with Ukraine to begin. However, there was no connection with the release of blocked money for Hungary. … We have exhausted everything options to force Hungary to make changes to the judicial system. It must be said that the Hungarian government has really prepared them. So far the changes are only on paper, but if they do not work in practice, we can return to blocking money. Viktor Orban knows this,” said Vice President of the European Commission.
