While preparing a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the Russian Federation used the Trans-Siberian Railway, which began to be built during the time of Alexander III in 1891, to transport people and equipment from distant Siberia to the borders of Ukraine, Bloomberg writes, citing Hal Brands, a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute.

It is noted that as the war became bloody and protracted, Russian President Vladimir Putin began using the railway to strengthen and replenish his army by importing artillery shells from North Korea. The Trans-Siberian Railway is also being used to redirect Russian trade, which is under severe sanctions, to Asia.

“Of course, technology does not stand still: railways today compete with container ships, airplanes and other means of global transportation. But the relevance of the key railways of Eurasia remains,” the publication quotes the expert.

As international tensions rise, Russia and China are deepening cooperation and focusing on routes beyond the reach of the U.S. navy, he said. The stronger the continental ties between them, the more resistant they will be to pressure from the West.

“Let the railway be built,” declared Tsar Alexander III in 1891. More than a century later, the Trans-Siberian Railway is still at the center of Eurasian and global conflict,” Brands points out in an article for Bloomberg.

He also added that this explains why Ukraine seeks to weaken Russian military efforts by destroying railways. In November, Ukrainian operatives carried out a series of successive attacks on critical sections of the Baikal-Amur Railway, which is part of the larger Trans-Siberian Railway complex.

The Trans-Siberian Railway is a railway between Chelyabinsk and Vladivostok, connecting the European part of the Russian Federation with the largest East Siberian and Far Eastern industrial cities. Built in 1891-1916. Russian officials believed that the Trans-Siberian Railway would allow deeper penetration into East Asia.

Strikes by the Armed Forces of Ukraine on the transport infrastructure of the Russian Federation

Earlier, wrote that an unknown drone hit the area of a railway station in one of the cities of the Kursk region. The compressor station of the Dmitriev railway station was damaged.

Russian occupiers are already preparing for the loss of the Crimean Bridge. They believe that the destruction of the illegally built crossing is only a matter of time. Military expert Ivan Kirichevsky thinks so. According to him, the Russians are planning to build an alternative route in case of loss of the bridge across the Kerch Strait.
