According to Chaly, Putin wants to show NATO the inadequacy of the alliance’s rapid response mechanism.
The Russian dictator seeks to attack NATO, and Russia may attack Estonia. This was stated by diplomat, former Ambassador of Ukraine to the United States Valery Chaly.
“My opinion is that Putin really wants to do this in order to show NATO the failure of rapid response,” he explained his statement on the Espresso TV channel.
He emphasized that NATO has only now begun to change its strategy of containment to a strategy of prevention. Previously, in the event of an attack on one of the bloc countries, “this country defends itself for 48 hours or a week, and then other NATO countries join in.”
“First, the rapid reaction forces, and then NATO. Now Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia have posed the question point blank: look what happened in Ukraine when Belarus and Russia went to Kiev, Bucha, Gostomel, Irpen, Borodyanka, Moshchun. No, we We don’t want that, we are countries that want your contingents to be already deployed. Therefore, Germany decided to deploy a German brigade on the territory of Lithuania, the only problem is that it is only 2027,” the diplomat noted.
At the same time, Chaly added that Russia could attack earlier, when NATO is not ready for this.
“It’s a matter of time and a question of the strength of these countries and NATO, so this probability will change, but it remains absolutely real. I just think that most likely they can attack (my opinion, not supported by operational plans) Estonia. There is Narva, these Russian all the moods, and very serious agents have been exiled there not even since the times of the USSR, but exiled over the past decades,” the diplomat stated.
Threat of Russian attack on other countries
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk does not rule out that Russia may attack European countries over the next few years. He stressed that from a strategic point of view, Europe is the object of Russian aggression, and “this will happen when Russia’s advantage in military capabilities becomes obvious.”
Earlier, BILD wrote that one of the European intelligence services is also considering this scenario. They predicted that a possible attack by the Russian Federation could occur in 2024-2025, when the United States would find itself “without a leader” due to a change of president and would not be able to quickly help its partners contain the Russian attack.
