Zakharova said the new agreement is expected to be signed during one of the upcoming contacts between the two presidents.
Russia’s Foreign Ministry said Wednesday it expects President Vladimir Putin and his Iranian counterpart to soon sign a new interstate treaty between the two countries, which is in the final stages of negotiations.
Last month, Putin held five-hour talks in the Kremlin with Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi amid growing political, trade and military ties between Moscow and Tehran, which the United States and Israel regard with concern, Reuters writes.
Maria Zakharova, a spokeswoman for Russia’s Foreign Ministry, told reporters on Wednesday that the new treaty would strengthen the strategic partnership between Moscow and Tehran and cover the full range of their ties.
“This document is not only timely, but also overdue. Since the signing of the current treaty, the international context has changed, and relations between the two countries are experiencing an unprecedented rise,” Zakharova said.
Zakharova said the new agreement is expected to be signed during one of the upcoming contacts between the two presidents. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the exact date for the meeting between the two leaders has not yet been determined.
Cooperation between Iran and the Russian Federation – details
In November, the Kremlin said Russia and Iran were developing their relationship, “including in the field of military-technical cooperation,” but declined to comment on White House speculation that Iran might be considering providing Russia with ballistic missiles.
Iranian authorities have said that military cooperation with Russia is expanding every day. In November, Iran said it had completed agreements with Russia to supply it with Su-35 fighter jets, Mi-28 attack helicopters and Yak-130 pilot training aircraft.
Iran could provide Russia with surface-to-surface ballistic missiles that can hit targets up to 700 kilometers away. Sky News reports this, citing sources in the US Security Service.
