January 22 (February 4, old style) is the day of remembrance of the apostle Timothy from the age of 70, a disciple of the Apostle Paul and the first bishop of Ephesus.

The Apostle Timothy lived in the 1st century and was from the city of Lystra in Asia Minor. One day, the apostles Paul and Barnabas came to their city preaching Christianity. Through the prayer of Saint Paul, a young man lame from birth was healed in the city. After this, many residents believed in Christ and were baptized, among them Timothy, his mother Eunice and his grandmother Loida.

Timothy became a zealous disciple of the Apostle Paul, and soon became his companion and assistant in preaching. The Apostle Paul called Timothy his son. 15 years later, Paul ordained Timothy as bishop of the Ephesian Church.

Saint Timothy ended his life as a martyr: when the pagans celebrated a holiday in honor of idols in Ephesus, the apostle tried to stop them and preach faith in Christ. The pagans in rage attacked the saint and stoned him. In the 4th century, the holy relics of the Apostle Timothy were transferred to Constantinople, to the Church of the Holy Apostles.
