At the same time, for persons receiving social assistance in Germany, the rules, on the contrary, are becoming more stringent.
Following the Bundestag (Federal Assembly) of Germany, the Chamber of Federal States (Bundesrat) also approved new citizenship legislation. According to the new rules, from now on foreigners wishing to obtain a German passport do not need to renounce their own citizenship, AFP reports.
It is noted that the reform of the legislation on German citizenship makes it easier to obtain a passport as a citizen of the country and allows dual citizenship. Thus, now foreigners will be able to obtain German citizenship not after eight, but after five years of legal residence in Germany. In the case of “particularly successful integration” this period can be reduced to three years.
At the same time, given the current pro-Palestinian protests in Germany, in order to obtain German citizenship in the future, a foreigner will need to confirm loyalty not only to the German constitution, but also to the protection of Jews.
Obtaining German citizenship by Ukrainians
Germany has made it easier to obtain citizenship. According to the new law, some Ukrainian refugees will be able to apply for a German passport as early as 2025. One of the main provisions of the law is to reduce the period of residence in Germany from 8 to 5 years to obtain the right to obtain citizenship. And in the case of “special integration achievements,” naturalization will be possible even after three years.
