February 14 (February 27, old style) is the day of remembrance of St. Equal-to-the-Apostles Cyril, one of the authors of the Slavic alphabet.

Cyril, whose name from birth was Constantine, was born in the Byzantine city of Thessaloniki (this is a city in Thessalonica in Greece). At the age of 12, the boy was left an orphan and was raised by the logothete Feoktist (an official in the office of the patriarch). Kirill received a good education and decided to devote his life to serving God.

He was first the keeper of the library of the Hagia Sophia, and then a teacher of philosophy at the University of Constantinople. By order of the emperor, he often had to go on long trips to preach Christianity. Later, Cyril moved to live with his brother Methodius on Mount Olympus, where he devoted himself to science. Like-minded people gathered around the brothers, and together they thought about the idea of creating a Slavic alphabet.

In 862, at the request of Prince Rostislav, the brothers were sent to Moravia to preach the faith in their native language. Without the alphabet it was difficult to do this and the ruler supported the initiative. The brothers had to cope with a lot of work: they compiled the alphabet, taught how to conduct divine services, and in 3 years translated the “Gospel”, “Psalms” and other books from Greek.

After this, Cyril and Methodius went to the Pope to resolve the conflict over the alphabet. Theologians of that time believed that services should be conducted only in three languages - Hebrew, Greek and Latin, since neither of them was inscribed on the Cross of the Lord. But the brothers were of the opinion that every nation has the right to address God in its own language. Cyril handed over to Pope Adrian II the relics of Pope Clement, which he brought from Chersonesos. Adrian II approved worship in the Slavic language.

In Rome, the saint fell ill, took the schema and a new monastic name – Cyril. He died on February 14, 868, and was buried in the Church of St. Clement in Rome.

Holiday February 14th according to the old style – the day of remembrance of the martyr Tryphon, one of the early Christian saints, and the pre-celebration of the Presentation of the Lord.
