This is about a complementary approach to defense industrial issues that respects NATO’s competencies.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg stated the need to increase the Alliance’s defense production and provide long-term support for Ukraine.
This was reported on the NATO website. Stoltenberg’s deputy Mircea Geoane explained that we are talking about revitalizing the defense industry.
“Two years after the start of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, it is absolutely necessary for both Ukraine and Euro-Atlantic security to increase our defense production and update our defense industry,” the official noted.
The NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA) has agreed to approximately $10 billion in contracts since July 2023, including for Patriot missiles and 155mm projectiles, according to the deputy secretary general.
“Allies have a common set of forces. Therefore, we need to ensure a complementary approach to defense industrial issues that respects NATO’s competencies, for example in setting standards, and does not create barriers between allies,” Joana said.
War in Ukraine – NATO support
Recently, ex-NATO Secretary General and former British Defense Secretary George Robertson called for increased aid to Ukraine and increased production of weapons and ammunition. According to him, the Russian invasion has completely disrupted the international order. The former NATO Secretary General is convinced that if Putin manages to absorb a country of 44 million people right in the heart of Europe, he will not stop.
As the German newspaper Handelsblatt wrote, NATO plans to take over the coordination of arms supplies to Ukraine, despite the fact that the alliance has always considered assistance to Kyiv a matter of sovereign decisions of member countries and bilateral agreements, and not its program.
It is noted that the leadership of the bloc considers it advisable to integrate the Ramstein format into its own structures in order to protect itself from possible political changes in Washington.
