There is no detailed information in the public space, but sources say this is new alarming information.
Members of the US Congress will be informed of a “serious threat to national security.” According to CNN, citing its sources, the threat comes from Russia.
On Wednesday, February 14, Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee (lower house of Congress) Mike Turner said that congressmen will be provided with information about the national security threat for review. The letter Turner sent to congressmen claims it is an urgent matter involving “destabilizing foreign military power.”
The letter noted that permission for congressmen to review classified information would be valid from Wednesday to Friday. At the same time, Turner called on President Joe Biden to declassify “all information related to this threat.”
Turner did not provide any other details regarding the nature of this threat. But “two sources and a US official” told CNN the threat was linked to Russia. Multiple sources familiar with the intelligence described the findings as “highly sensitive.” One source who has seen the intelligence confirmed that “this is actually a very worrying and destabilizing” Russian capability “that we have recently become aware of.”
White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan confirmed the existence of such information at a briefing and said that he had arranged a personal meeting with leading congressmen on Thursday to discuss this information with them. But Turner beat him to it with his public announcement, which Sullivan said surprised him.
Also, the White House adviser said that he could not publicly disclose details regarding the danger that he wanted to talk about with congressmen. But he noted that the Biden administration has already gone further than its predecessors in declassifying intelligence data regarding US national interests.
“So you certainly won’t see any reluctance to do it if it’s in the best interest of our national security,” Sullivan said.
Threat to Western countries from Russia
As wrote, NATO is increasingly warning that Russia could carry out aggression against the countries of the alliance. In particular, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius warned about the threat of direct war between the Russian Federation and Western countries in January.
The Baltic countries are said to be the most likely victim of Russian aggression. Because of this, they decided to build a defense line along the border.
Amid these concerns, Donald Trump, who has a strong chance of becoming US president again, has hinted that he is not opposed to Russian aggression against America’s European allies, which spend little on their own defense.
