Allies now have three ways to help Ukraine.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that Alliance member countries purchase ammunition from “close partners” in Asia, which allows them to replenish their own stocks and take aid for Ukraine from them.
In an interview with Suspilny, he commented on the words of Czech President Peter Pavel, who found 800 thousand ammunition. These shells can be sent to Ukraine within weeks if funding is available.
“We saw that NATO partners exported ammunition directly to NATO and NATO allied countries – and this helped these allies support Ukraine. Of course, because of what we buy from such countries (I will not mention them, but they are close partners NATO in Asia), NATO allies can then replenish their stockpiles, and this allows them to continue to draw aid from their stockpiles to support Ukraine. Therefore, this is also important,” Stoltenberg said.
According to the Secretary General, NATO allies can now provide support to Ukraine in three ways:
- run out of supplies;
- import from third parties and then ship more to Ukraine;
- increase your own production.
He added that all three options are being actively pursued by partners to ensure they can continue to provide “significant military support to Ukraine.”
Purchase of ammunition for Ukraine
On February 17, President Pavel announced that the Czech Republic had found sources abroad for hundreds of thousands of artillery ammunition, which it could deliver to Ukraine in a matter of weeks if it secures funding from partners in the United States, Germany, Sweden and other countries
EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell said on February 20 that European Union member countries can purchase ammunition for Ukraine outside the bloc.
As wrote, the Netherlands also believes that it is necessary to use all possible options to provide Ukraine with military assistance.
On February 21, he informed that Canada had given a signal that it was ready to support the initiative of the Czech Republic to urgently deliver tens of thousands of artillery shells from different countries to Ukraine.
